Not maintaining high hygiene standards is one of the main factors contributing towards food companies being prosecuted. So if you work within the food industry, what should you be doing / looking out for when cleaning your premises:

  • Products used within an area where food is prepared, packaged or stored must meet the BS EN standards. When looking at purchasing solutions, check the labels for these codes: BS EN1276 & BS EN13697
  • Before starting any tasks, you must ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly first, it is equally as important to continue washing your hands in between tasks.
  • Always ensure that you disinfect and clean all areas, surfaces and equipment used in between different jobs you complete.
  • It is imperative that you don’t let food waste build up, and that you dispose of all food waste appropriately. In order to keep on top of everything, having a cleaning schedule in place is both helpful and effective.
  • You should clean as you go, if something spills, clear it up and clean the surface immediately.
  • Make sure you check the guidelines on the product you are using and ensure you use the appropriate measurements for the task in hand. Doing this will help assist in achieving the results you want, as well as making sure no formula is misused and wasted.
